1820 US Census Study - Ebenezer Jameson family (1754) of Maine

There appears to be three (3) census returns available, in all of Maine for Ebenezer Jameson families, for the 1820 census period. However, only one in the Hancock County area of Maine. Fortunately that census pertains to the Ebenezer Jameson (1755-1828) of interest to us

Purpose: To try and decipher the often confusing early census returns. One census return for each analysis, as many test people as necessary.

Method: Compare the values entered for the actual census in the 'brown' row, with the known (or presumed) information in the appropriate locations for each person who might be associated with this census analysis, within the lower 'light blue' rows.

Results: The entry row that matches with the actual census results can be considered that person/family most likely a match and the person/family most likely actually in the census.

Comments: There is often more people, particularly children, on the "official" actual census that in the "known persons" area, for obvious reasons (they're not known). There is sometimes people missing on the "official" actual census that in the "known persons" area. This can be from death or someone moving out (away) of the household.

This study is to examine and evaluate the speculation by some researchers, that an additional Alexander was born to this particular Ebenezer and Catherine (Demorse) Jameson family, about 1797. We know this other Alexander Jameson existed, the issue here is does he belong as a son with this family. Below is a study of the 1820 census return, which includes all expected people we know about, including the possibility of a more recent Alexander (as if he existed within this family), to see how that compares to the actual 1820 census.

Analysis & Conclusions - Given it's location at that time and that these results are not at all in conflict with the earlier 1800 census, this should be the census record for the Ebenezer and Catherine (DeMorse) Jameson. Although this is NOT EXACTLY as expected for the Ebenezer and Cathrine (Demorse) and Jameson family to be, enumerating more children and confusing ages than known about. However, accepting it to be correct as given, it looks as though it does include, or at least allow for, the Alexander born 1797, as part of what was enumerated. However, so should known son (Ebenezer b.1797)) still have been enumerated in this census, not yet married and not otherwise enumerated. It appears that one of these two is not accounted for and whereabouts otherwise not known. Nevertheless, until this can be better explained and understood, it must be assumed inconclusive at best.

Note: Special recognition must go to Nancy (Nan) Flickinger (a descendant of Hugh and Janet [Brock] Jameson) for this wonderful Census Analytical Tool graphic she developed and has so generously allowed us to use.
