There is a mistake in E. O. Jameson's book "The Jamesons in America"[1] on page 191 & 202, concerning Charles Jameson (#999). Although E.O.Jameson got the opening lineage correctly (Paul2, William1), he then has him married twice, first to Ruth Horton and second to Agnes Hyler. This is incorrect. This Charles Jameson (#0999 in E.O.Jameson's Book "The Jamesons in America") was indeed married to Ruth Horton, as recorded correctly, but the marriage to Agnes Hyler was actually a son of this Charles and Ruth Jameson, also named Charles, born about 1784, who is not acknowledged, or recorded by E.O. Jameson anywhere in his book. It was this second Charles who married Agnes Hyler and who had the children named in the book as attributed to his father and mother. There is ample independent proof of this other Charles Jameson, including his 1808 marriage to Agnes Hyler, his 1828 burial in the Glen Cove Cemetery and several independent genealogies and family histories attesting to this. The elder Charles (#999 in the Jamesons in America) is said to have died in 1806 and the 1810 Federal Census for Maine bears this out, matching the younger Charles Jameson family exactly. This mistake in Mr. Jamesons book is confusing and unfortunate, yet understandable given the similarity of names, places and dates. The genealogy and family history given on these pages (www.mainejamesons.com) is our best effort to correct the misrepresentations in the Jamesons in America book and with any other accounting of this family based on the information in that book. |
